Someone who only looked at the headline but did not read the article could get the wrong impression.

Comment on What is Emulation? This is a Commodore emulator for use on PCs. I have used it for several years since my C64 computer went “dead bug” on me and I was unable to find a replacement for it. With this emulator on my PC I have been able to enjoy about 80% of my C64 programs. The only problem is that there is no way to directly access my printer with the printer programs.

Comment on OneCommander Is a Great File Explorer Alternative for Power Users by Craig Knapp https://maketecheasier.com/onecommander-file-explorer-alternative/#comment-133290 Wed, 01 Apr 2026 11:57:56 +0000 https://admin.maketecheasier.com/?post_type=pitch&p=859992#comment-133290 The fact Windoze (mis-spelled on purpose in a tone of derision due to being an MS Stockholm Syndrome victim after paying to be a WinME beta tester for having paid full MSRP… but I digress) File Explorer is not a dual-pane solution in 2026 is planned obsolescence. Norton Tools 6 for DOS back in 1996 had a dual-pane file manager.

Some of us started using DP file managers back in the freeware and shareware days such as 2xExplorer by Mike Lyn (I donated to his cause) 15 or so years ago, and more recently x2Explorer by ZabKat.

These programs have instant folder comparison helping the user to identify matching and non-matching files for easy synchronization.

Considering how we ingest data from memory cards used by POS cameras, professional DLSRs, action cams (I own several of each category) etc, to our computers, a DP File manager is essential to data management.

It will not recognize my kindle ebooks to read them. Now forcing me to use the Kindle app and assistive reader voice. They have now made it that you cannot opt out nor downgrade. I would very much downgrade or opt out.

It was so tightly veiled, it’d be easy to miss.

But honestly, I was insulted and disappointed. “Hey, you’re the problem, it’s you.” So basically, change how I do everything and FIXED! Ridiculous message in an unworthy-for-posting article. In the future? Consider empathy. Consider solutions vs excuses. Js.

Comment on The Easiest Way to Manage Dotfiles Using GNU Stow by dragonmouth https://maketecheasier.com/dotfile-management-with-gnu-stow/#comment-133278 Thu, 26 Mar 2026 12:03:38 +0000 https://admin.maketecheasier.com/?post_type=pitch&p=859175#comment-133278 STOW is a good idea IF every app standardized on the ´.config´ name for it´s configuration file(s). But this being Linux, each app is free to use it´s own name for the configuration file(s). There are .config files, *rc files, configuration files named after the app, etc and they are scattered all over the /home directory. Do you even know the name of every app that runs on your system?

STOW is not much better than manual maint of the config files. One still has to know every app and then manually setup it up in STOW. It would be nice if STOW went through the system and found ALL the configuration files and set them up.

Comment on The Easiest Way to Manage Dotfiles Using GNU Stow by Oscar https://maketecheasier.com/dotfile-management-with-gnu-stow/#comment-133276 Wed, 25 Mar 2026 14:55:39 +0000 https://admin.maketecheasier.com/?post_type=pitch&p=859175#comment-133276 Sounds like a great tool to combine all game configurations and saves in one location too.

Linux native game saves and configurations all over the place like somewhere deep inside .config or even in the top home directory. Not to mention wine game configuration and saves stored all over the place in .wine/drive_c/users/USER/AppData/WHATEVER. If we add them all in one location, I can easily back up and restore when installing new OS, or re-creating wine. Although some game service apps detect symlinks and refuse to proceed further.

You could also combine all non-essential game directories like cache directory be combined in a separate fast storage that will not be backed up.

Very useful tool, thank you for introducing GNU stow.

There is a native Linux tax program called OpenTaxSolver. I´ve been using it for the last 10 years. The user interface is not as pretty and as ¨modern¨ as TurboTax and other tax programs but it is free and it does the job. However, it can only be used to do personal taxes.

When you type ‘End Alexa Plus’ in the Ask Alexa box it now refuses, saying you cannot disable Alexa plus. So we went a different route. I unplugged all teh Alexa devices and let Amazon know we are no longer using their platform until they change their minds.
