Clean the Touchpad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Touchpads become sticky over time and will stop working if not cleaned regularly. If you haven\u2019t cleaned the Chromebook\u2019s touchpad in a while, clean it with a microfiber cloth, or any soft cloth. Make sure there is no dirt, dust, or oil left on the touchpad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"drumroll-finger\">2. Do a Drum Roll<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is recommended to drum your fingers on the touchpad for at least 10 seconds. This causes vibrations, which can loosen dirt or other unwanted material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"press-esc-key\">3. Press Esc Key Repeatedly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you notice that the touchpad only stops working on particular pages, it could be that those pages are blocking touch input or have scripts running in the background, taking up the computer resources. Try pressing the <kbd>ESC<\/kbd> key several times on your keyboard to stop the current page from loading. If something isn&#8217;t working normally on that page, pressing the <kbd>ESC<\/kbd> key will stop that process, and the touchpad will eventually start functioning again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Chromebook-Touchpad-Not-Working-Keyboard2.jpg\" alt=\"Chromebook Touchpad Not Working Keyboard2\" class=\"wp-image-474234\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"touchpad-settings\">4. Make Changes to the Touchpad Settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When the touchpad is not responsive, try making changes to the touchpad settings to see if it can &#8220;wake&#8221; up the touchpad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Search for &#8220;touchpad&#8221; on the Settings page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Make sure <strong>Enable tap-to-click<\/strong> and <strong>Enable tap dragging<\/strong> are active in the Touchpad section. Restart Chromebook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid any boot-up glitches, restart the Chromebook, and check whether the touchpad is working again. Please note that you need to actually reboot the Chromebook and not just put it to sleep or close the lid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To restart the Chromebook, click on the time icon in the bottom-right corner to open the <strong>Quick panel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"729\" height=\"782\" src=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/chromebook-restart-icon.jpg\" alt=\"Chromebook Restart Icon\" class=\"wp-image-709315\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Press the <strong>Shut down<\/strong> button to turn off the Chromebook. Wait for 30 seconds, then turn the Chromebook back on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Good to know<\/strong>: the Chromebook is a capable gaming machine too. Reset Chromebook Hardware<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the above method, you can try doing a hard reset on your Chromebook. This will not delete your files but will restart hardware components like the touchpad and keyboard. Hopefully, the touchpad will start working again after performing a hard reset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Turn off your Chromebook using the <strong>Shutdown<\/strong> button in the Quick Panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Press and hold the <kbd>Refresh<\/kbd> key, and while holding it, press the <kbd>Power<\/kbd> key to turn on the Chromebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Use a Different Chrome Profile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes the issue with a Chromebook touchpad not working is limited to only one profile. Try using the Chromebook in guest mode or with a different account to see if the touchpad starts working again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Click on the time in the bottom-right corner of the Chromebook. Click the <strong>Power<\/strong> icon followed by the <strong>Sign out<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"676\" height=\"727\" src=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/chromebook-sign-out-option.jpg\" alt=\"Chromebook Sign Out Option\" class=\"wp-image-709571\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Click on the <strong>Browse as Guest<\/strong> button at the bottom of the lock screen. Try using the <strong>Guest mode<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"455\" src=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Chromebook-Touchpad-Not-Working-Browse-Guest.jpg\" alt=\"Chromebook Touchpad Not Working Browse Guest\" class=\"wp-image-474228\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>you may not see the <strong>Guest mode<\/strong> option if you are using a Chromebook from school or work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the touchpad works fine in <strong>Guest mode<\/strong>, add a new user account on your Chromebook, and delete the older one. Hopefully, that should fix the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"factory-reset\">8. Factory Reset Chromebook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If none of the above worked, factory reset the Chromebook. This will wipe all your files and restore the device to the factory settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Settings, search for <strong>powerwash<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"265\" src=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/chromebook-powerwash-settings-800x265.jpg\" alt=\"Chromebook Powerwash Settings\" class=\"wp-image-709573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/chromebook-powerwash-settings-800x265.jpg 800w, https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/chromebook-powerwash-settings.jpg 1137w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Reset settings page, click the <strong>Reset<\/strong> button, and follow the instructions to factory reset your device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the touchpad is still not working, even after factory resetting the Chromebook, it is probably a hardware failure and best to send your Chromebook in for repair.
