You&#8217;ll often find that the pound sterling and dollar signs are available, but you&#8217;ll need to hunt for the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you see question mark boxes where a symbol should be, it&#8217;s because the font you&#8217;re using doesn&#8217;t support that particular symbol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"363\" src=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-font-book-800x363.png\" alt=\"Macos Font Book\" class=\"wp-image-736086\" style=\"width:572px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-font-book-800x363.png 800w, https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-font-book.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need to change your font to one that supports the symbols you need, try Font Book. You can free type the symbols, then scroll through fonts to find something suitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s run through how to type various common symbols on both U.S. and UK keyboards:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u20ac: Euro<\/strong>: for U.S. keyboards, type a Euro (<strong>\u20ac<\/strong>) sign on Mac using <kbd>Alt<\/kbd>\/<kbd>Option<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>2<\/kbd>. For UK keyboards, use the <kbd>Alt<\/kbd>\/<kbd>Option<\/kbd> + <kbd>2<\/kbd> shortcut. On European keyboards, the Euro symbol will be on the keyboard by default.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u00a3: British Pound Sterling<\/strong>: On a U.S. keyboard, use <kbd>Alt<\/kbd>\/<kbd>Option<\/kbd> + <kbd>3<\/kbd>, while on a UK keyboard, use <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>3<\/kbd>. UK keyboards will have the pound sterling symbol on the keyboard by default.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>$ and \u00a2: Dollars and Cents.<\/strong> Type a dollar sign (<strong>$<\/strong>) using <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>4<\/kbd>. If you want to type the cent (<strong>\u00a2<\/strong>) symbol, use <kbd>Alt<\/kbd>\/<kbd>Option<\/kbd> + <kbd>4<\/kbd>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u00a5: Japanese Yen and Chinese Yuan\/Renminbi.<\/strong> Type the <strong>\u00a5<\/strong> symbol using the <kbd>Option<\/kbd> + <kbd>Y<\/kbd> keyboard shortcut.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that this will depend on your keyboard layout and language you&#8217;re using, but for standard QWERTY keyboards using a variation of English, this is likely what you will find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tip: learn special <a href=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/cheatsheet\/pages-keyboard-shortcuts\/\" data-lasso-id=\"46279\">keyboard shortcuts for Pages<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"use-the-keyboard-viewer\">How to Use the Keyboard Viewer to Help You Find Special Characters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mac includes a number of accessibility features, one of which is the Keyboard Viewer. For our purposes, we can use this to find special characters on the keyboard without trial and error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Head to the Input menu in the menu bar, and click <strong>Show Keyboard Viewer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"308\" src=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/mac-show-keyboards-viewer-800x308.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-736087\" style=\"width:701px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/mac-show-keyboards-viewer-800x308.jpg 800w, https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/mac-show-keyboards-viewer.jpg 1110w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This will bring up an overlay of your current keyboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"440\" src=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-virtual-keyboard-800x440.jpg\" alt=\"macOS virtual keyboard\" class=\"wp-image-736088\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-virtual-keyboard-800x440.jpg 800w, https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-virtual-keyboard.jpg 1092w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hold down a key, and the display will change to show you what other modifiers and keys are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-virtual-keyboard-modifiers-800x425.png\" alt=\"Macos Virtual Keyboard Modifiers\" class=\"wp-image-736089\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-virtual-keyboard-modifiers-800x425.png 800w, https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-virtual-keyboard-modifiers.png 1198w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The nice thing about the Keyboard Viewer is that you&#8217;ll also see the &#8220;dead keys,&#8221; those keys that can&#8217;t be used with that modifier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"add-more-special-characters\">How to Add More Special Characters Using the Character Viewer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need to use a currency symbol that isn&#8217;t supported by a keyboard shortcut, use the built-in Character Viewer. This lets you access a range of additional characters, including arrows, bullets, stars and &#8220;letter-like symbols,&#8221; such as Fahrenheit, Celsius, and the trademark sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To launch the Character Viewer, select <strong>Edit -&gt; Emoji &amp; Symbols<\/strong> from the menu bar of any app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"556\" src=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-emoji-symbols-800x556.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-736090\" style=\"width:630px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-emoji-symbols-800x556.jpg 800w, https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-emoji-symbols.jpg 854w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As an alternative, set up the <kbd>Function<\/kbd> key within the <strong>System Preferences -&gt;  Keyboard<\/strong> screen to open the Character Viewer. To insert the character into your document, double-click a variation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"use-text-expansion\">How to Use Text Expansion to Type Special Characters on Mac<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the underused features of macOS is the text expansion option. This is a way to type full sentences using shorthand letters and acronyms. It&#8217;s &#8220;txtspk&#8221; for your Mac. The functionality is also great for displaying symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, open the <strong>System Preferences -&gt; Keyboard<\/strong> panel, then select <strong>Text Input -&gt; Text Replacements<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"343\" src=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-text-replacement-800x343.png\" alt=\"Macos Text Replacement\" class=\"wp-image-736094\" style=\"width:606px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-text-replacement-800x343.png 800w, https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macos-text-replacement.png 934w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Click the <strong>+<\/strong> icon at the bottom of this screen, type your shorthand in the <strong>Replace<\/strong> field, and the desired symbol in the <strong>With<\/strong> field. The key is to find a shortcut phrase that you wouldn&#8217;t use anywhere else (to avoid accidentally triggering the shortcut).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"660\" height=\"402\" src=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/macOS-text-replacement-1.png\" alt=\"Macos Text Replacement 1\" class=\"wp-image-738167\" style=\"width:484px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So if, for example, you wanted to make a shortcut for the pound sterling button, you could make <strong>Replace<\/strong> something like <strong>GBP<\/strong>. The chances of you using GBP elsewhere in another context is very remote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>With<\/strong> section, add your currency symbol. As we have shown, it&#8217;s not a big problem to easily find that symbol, though just a tiny bit of extra digging may be involved.
