Even if you didn&#8217;t leave it where it could be stolen, tampering is still a real risk. A malicious actor can exploit them to execute attacks, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/disable-enable-uefi-secure-boot-windows\/\" data-lasso-id=\"58784\">disabling secure boot<\/a> to install <a href=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/what-is-kernel-level-malware\/\" data-lasso-id=\"58785\">rootkits<\/a>. You can password-protect the BIOS so others are unable to access it to change your system settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do so, <a href=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/enter-bios-windows-7-methods\/\" data-lasso-id=\"58786\">access the BIOS<\/a> and look for the <strong>Admin\/Setup password<\/strong> option under the <strong>Security<\/strong> or <strong>Authentication<\/strong> section. Here, you can add a password to lock the BIOS and prevent unauthorized access. Keep in mind that while it&#8217;s a deterrent to most malicious actors, a dedicated attacker can easily <a href=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/reset-pc-bios-uefi\/\" data-lasso-id=\"58787\">reset the BIOS<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/how-to-reset-cmos-and-why\/\" data-lasso-id=\"58788\">resetting CMOS<\/a> on some laptops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/admin-password-bios-800x371.jpg\" alt=\"Admin Password setting in UEFI\" class=\"wp-image-831364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/admin-password-bios-800x371.jpg 800w, https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/admin-password-bios-400x185.jpg 400w, https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/admin-password-bios.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"disable-boot\">Disable External Boot Support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You should also turn off the ability to boot your PC through a <a href=\"https:\/\/maketecheasier.com\/use-rufus-create-bootable-flash-drive\/\" data-lasso-id=\"58789\">bootable drive<\/a>. A malicious actor can use that to possibly gain access to your data or install backdoors. You can turn off the ability to boot from an external drive in the BIOS to prevent this from happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Access BIOS again and look for the <strong>USB configuration<\/strong> menu. It should have a <strong>Boot support<\/strong> option to prevent booting from external devices. Disable it, and it will prevent booting from a different drive. You can get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0718WB172?tag=maketecheas08-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow sponsored noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"58791\" data-lasso-name=\"Amazon\">TamperSafe tape<\/a> to create custom-sized tamper-detection stickers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"port-protectors\">Get USB Port Protectors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since USB ports are the key entry point for tampering, you can use a more robust solution to prevent any exploitation. You can buy dedicated USB port protectors that will prevent others from inserting any USB device in the ports. It has a pre-boot authentication feature that prevents loading of the OS without the encryption key. You can lock down the OS and encrypt data, so your system becomes inaccessible.
